Support from Save Our Shores
"Save Our Shores supports the well-considered recommendations put forth by the Freedom From Fireworks coalition to reduce the use of illegal fireworks on beaches and in neighborhoods in Santa Cruz.
"As an organization who conducts Holiday Relief beach cleanups across the county on days such as Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day, we have first hand experience dealing with the significant volume of litter resulting from the use of fireworks. We do this work, which is in part supported by financial resources provided by the City in efforts to keep our Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary shores clean and prevent potentially toxic residue from entering the ocean."
Support from Santa Cruz SPCA and Humane Society
"Be it resolved, the Board of Directors of the Santa Cruz SPCA and Humane Society urges both the City of Santa Cruz and the County of Santa Cruz to do what is legally and morally required to enforce the policy on illegal fireworks, and further to set a positive example by declaring that the blatant disregard of the laws in place will not be tolerated in any form now or in the future."

"Thank you for creating this site. I have a toddler and a dog at home and my neighborhood has been plagued with what seems like nightly fireworks. It wreaks havoc on my household's sleep - and until now I felt so powerless. I am happy to finally have a place that helps me take action!"
"It is a crime that a few thoughtless people can disturb entire communities, animals and humans, with loud frightening fireworks, beginning before and lasting well after the fourth and on other holidays also. I do not understand lack of enforcement." "On the 4th of July in '74 or '75, I gave a guided tour along the Beach Boardwalk to some friends from Montana. I convinced them to bring protective clothing including snow goggles, stocking cap, long sleeves and pants, shoes, and gloves. We watched the annual fireworks show from West Cliff. Afterward we proceeded down to the beach by the Wharf, strolled along the tideline to the rivermouth, and observed humanity go completely bonkers with heavy duty industrial strength explosive fireworks. The beach was packed end to end. Craziness included a bottle rocket war between people on the beach and those on the other side of the river along the cliff. Others set up underneath the Boardwalk tram to blast off aerials exploding right next to the moving cabs. Many of those inside threw firecrackers down to the beach. There was simply no way to crowd-control so the Santa Cruz Boardwalk Annual fireworks show came to a close." Stephen Parlato "I wish these people who get a charge out of setting off the boom booms should have spent some time in Vietnam 67/68. I am under medical care for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)/ The stuff that I was exposed too then the memories never go away. When I heard last nite's fireworks, I jumped out of my chair and laid prone on the floor. The noise brought back memory of 122mm rockets coming in and exploding near me. PLEASE PEOPLE BE CONSIDERATE ABOUT VETERANS. Its no fun to live like this." "I am so glad this group is forming! My dog and I and many of our friends have been beside ourselves with frustration!" Our small dog is terrified by fireworks and gets anxiety and panic attacks when they go off. Also, we are concerned about fire danger in our drought stricken state." |
"The Animal Shelter is in my neighborhood and I can only imagine how those blasts affect those defenseless creatures. It really is animal abuse too."
"My back yard borders on Jose Park and I bear the brunt of the detonations and I'm concerned about roof fires. Makes me feel like I'm in Viet Nam again!!" Roy P. Capaldo, Lt Col, USAF, Ret "Fireworks often are very hard on autistic people, such as a member of my family." "I would like to save myself from having to listen to fireworks at all. I am so glad there is a group to fight this problem. Please let me know what I can do, other than cower in bed with pillows over my head." "Fireworks are a threat to people and kids health, but health care organizations and schools are taking the money [made from the sale of fireworks] to support and help people. It's so absurd, disturbing and wrong." "I live adjacent to the entrance to Manresa Uplands Campground. People frequently set off fireworks in the empty parking lot at night. It is not only annoying but a fire hazard, and indeed there was a fire near the water tank several years ago that the fire department responded to." "I have had a bottle rocket lodged in the cedar shingle siding on my house and the ends of finned rockets that have come down on my roof. I have to wet down my siding every year and stay home to be sure my house doesn't catch on fire. One of my dogs has to be tranquilized on July 4th and goes nuts in the weeks leading up to the fourth." "My husband is a Korea/Vietnam vet. Retired Air Force. Every year I post the same thing. Please be considerate of others when you think about setting off those extremely loud fireworks. Our vets go to war to keep us living in a free country. They learn to fight and if they live to come home they are broken. With PTSD. None of us will ever know what it's like to fight in a WAR if we have not been there and done that. Every time one of those rockets or loud bomb fireworks are set off my husband starts to hit the floor. To him it's the war all over again and 'incoming' bombs. Give some thought the next time you set one of them off. Imagine the fear of fighting in a war. Many just don't get it." |
